A Gloss Toner is a fast, demi- or semi-permanent colour treatment applied over your existing colour to boost shine, refine tone, and neutralise unwanted warmth. It's ideal for anyone wanting to keep their colour looking polished between fuller appointments, without the commitment of a permanent change.

What the service involves
At Timba in Cardiff, our stylists apply gloss toner to clean, towel-dried hair for a quick refresh:
- Consultation to discuss your current colour and desired outcome, whether that's more shine, less brassiness, or a subtle tone shift
- Application of the gloss toner from roots to ends, worked through in sections for even coverage
- Processing for up to around 20 minutes, depending on the formula and your hair's starting point
- Rinse and style to reveal smoother, glossier, more balanced colour
The whole appointment typically takes up to 45 minutes.
Who it suits
Gloss toner works well for most hair types and colour histories:
- Clients with lightened hair (highlights, balayage, or full blonding) looking to correct warmth and keep tones cool or balanced
- Anyone wanting to extend the life of a recent colour service without repeating strong chemical processing
- Those with fading colour who want richer, more even tone and added shine
- Hair with early greys, where gloss toner can soften contrast, though it won't give full coverage like permanent dye
It's a maintenance and finishing service rather than a full colour change, so it won't lift natural colour or cover dark regrowth significantly. Our team, including Ceri O'Brien, our colour expert, and senior stylists like Katie Williams, Emma Stokes, and Hannah James, can advise during consultation on whether gloss toner or a fuller colour service is the better fit.
What to expect afterwards
Results are noticeable straight away and generally last 4 to 6 weeks:
- Hair looks glossier, smoother, and less brassy
- Colour appears more even and refined
- Longevity depends on hair porosity, wash frequency, and heat styling habits
To help results last, use sulfate-free, colour-safe shampoo, wash less often with cooler water, and minimise heat styling or use a heat protectant. Avoid clarifying shampoos or other strong chemical treatments straight after the service.
