How to Get a Salon-Quality Blow Dry That Lasts

There is nothing quite like walking out of the salon with a fresh blow dry. The bounce, the shine, the way it just sits right. The frustrating part is recreating even half of that at home, then watching it drop or frizz by the next morning.
The good news is that a long-lasting blow dry is far more about technique than luck. Here is how our stylists approach it, and how you can get closer to that salon finish yourself.
Start with the prep
A great blow dry begins before the dryer is even switched on. Towel-dry gently by squeezing rather than rubbing, as rough drying roughens the hair and invites frizz. Then apply your products to damp, not soaking, hair.
The right products depend on what you want, but a heat protectant is non-negotiable, and a volumising or smoothing product will help set the shape you are going for. If your hair tends to fall flat, work a root-lifting product in at the roots and comb through so it is evenly distributed.
Rough dry first, then section
One of the biggest home mistakes is trying to style straight away while the hair is still very wet. Instead, rough dry until your hair is around 80 percent dry, using your fingers to move it around. This takes out most of the moisture without locking in any shape yet.
Once you are most of the way there, split the hair into sections and clip them up. Working section by section, from the bottom layers upward, is exactly what we do in the salon, and it is the single biggest thing that separates a lasting blow dry from one that collapses.
Tension and airflow are everything
For each section, keep the brush moving slowly with gentle tension, and always point the nozzle down the hair shaft from root to tip. This smooths the cuticle in one direction, which is what creates shine and stops frizz.
A round brush will give you volume and a soft curl at the ends, while a paddle brush keeps things sleek and straight. This is also where good tools earn their place. As Wales' only Dyson Destination salon, we style with Dyson tools because the controlled heat and airflow make a genuine difference to the finish and help protect the hair while you dry.

Lock it in with a cool shot
Here is the step most people skip. Once a section is dry and shaped, hit it with the cool button for a few seconds before you release the brush. Cool air sets the style in place, a little like setting a curl, and it is one of the easiest ways to make a blow dry last an extra day.
Finish with a light mist of hairspray or a shine spray, and resist the urge to keep touching it. The more you run your hands through it, the faster it drops.
When you want the real thing
Home styling can get you a long way, but nothing beats a professional blow dry for a special occasion or simply a treat. Our stylists will get you that flawless, long-lasting finish, and can show you a few tricks to take home while they are at it.
