Straighteners, curling tongs, hairdryers. Most of us reach for at least one of them without a second thought, but heat is one of the biggest causes of everyday hair damage. The frustrating thing is that the damage builds up slowly, so by the time you notice the dryness, breakage, and split ends, it has already been happening for a while.

The reassuring news is that you do not have to give up styling. You just need to protect your hair properly. Here is everything you need to know.

## What heat actually does to your hair

Each strand of hair has an outer layer called the cuticle, made up of overlapping scales a little like roof tiles. When your hair is healthy, those scales lie flat, which is what gives hair its shine and smoothness.

High heat lifts and damages those scales, and it also drives moisture out of the hair. Over time this leaves the hair dry, brittle, more prone to frizz, and far more likely to snap. Colour-treated and lightened hair is even more vulnerable, because the colouring process has already opened the cuticle.

## Why a heat protectant is non-negotiable

A heat protectant does exactly what the name suggests. It forms a barrier over the hair that helps distribute heat more evenly and reduces how much moisture is lost. Many also add slip, so your brush or straightener glides through rather than dragging.

Think of it the same way you think of sun cream. You would not sit in strong sun without it, and hot tools reach far higher temperatures than a summer's day. We stock professional heat protection products, including options from KMS, and our stylists can point you to the right one for your hair type and how often you style.

Apply it to damp hair before blow drying, and again on dry hair before you use straighteners or tongs if you want full coverage.

## Get the temperature right

More heat is not better. One of the simplest ways to protect your hair is to turn the dial down.

For most people, there is no need to run straighteners at their maximum setting. Fine or fragile hair generally needs a lower temperature, while thick or coarse hair can take a little more. Start lower than you think, and only increase if you truly need to. You will often find a medium setting does the job with a single pass, and a single pass at a sensible temperature is far kinder than three passes on high.

## Everyday habits that help

A few small changes add up to much healthier hair:

Never use hot tools on soaking wet hair, as this causes the most damage. Give your hair regular heat-free days to recover. Keep the dryer moving rather than holding it in one spot, and always aim the airflow down the hair shaft. Book in regular trims to keep split ends from travelling up the strand. And support your hair from the inside out with a bond-building treatment such as K18 if you style or colour often.

## Looking after damaged hair

If your hair is already feeling the effects of heat, it is not beyond help. The right cut, a course of strengthening treatments, and better styling habits can make a real difference. Our team is always happy to take a look and recommend a plan that suits your hair.
